"Take an eye supplement" covers two different families of product, and they are not interchangeable. One is built around the carotenoids that concentrate in the retina. The other is fish oil. Here is what is on our shelf, sorted by family, so you can match the bottle to the conversation you had.
Which of these fits you, if any, depends on your own eyes, your diet and anything else you take. That is a conversation for your optometrist or pharmacist, not a page.
Family one: macular carotenoids
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are the three carotenoids that naturally concentrate at the centre of the retina. These formulas are taken once a day, over the long term, to support the macular pigment.
| MacuHealth | MacuHealth+ | Vision Essence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carotenoids | Meso-zeaxanthin 10 mg, lutein 10 mg, zeaxanthin 2 mg | Meso-zeaxanthin 10 mg, lutein 10 mg, zeaxanthin 2 mg | The three macular carotenoids, from non-GMO marigold. Amounts not listed on the product page |
| Added vitamins and minerals | None | Vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 268 mg, zinc 25 mg, copper 1548 mcg | Antioxidant vitamins and minerals. Amounts not listed on the product page |
| Dose | One softgel daily with a meal | One softgel daily with a meal | One capsule daily with a meal |
| Bottle | 90 softgels, about 3 months | 90 softgels, about 3 months | 90 capsules |
What the "plus" in MacuHealth+ means
MacuHealth+ is the same three carotenoids as MacuHealth, at the same amounts, with the antioxidant vitamins and minerals studied in the AREDS2 eye-nutrition research added on top: vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper. It uses a lower 25 mg zinc level rather than the 80 mg used in the original AREDS2 study. Because it contains added zinc, it is worth confirming the fit with your optometrist or pharmacist. Its own page puts it plainly: best chosen with your optometrist, based on your own eye exam.
Where Vision Essence sits
Vision Essence is also a once-daily capsule with the three macular carotenoids plus antioxidant vitamins and minerals, with the carotenoids sourced from non-GMO marigold flowers. Its product page does not list the individual amounts, so if you are comparing milligram for milligram, bring the bottle to your appointment.
Family two: omega-3
EPA and DHA are essential fats that have to come from food or from a supplement. Both of ours are from PRN, both are in the re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form, and both deliver the same amount per daily serving. What differs is how you take it.
| De3 | Omega Essentials High Potency Liquid | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Softgels | Lemon-flavoured liquid |
| Daily serving | Three softgels | One teaspoon |
| EPA and DHA per serving | 1,680 mg EPA and 560 mg DHA (2,240 mg omega-3s) | 1,680 mg EPA and 560 mg DHA |
| Form | Re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) | Re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) |
| Vitamin D3 | Included. Amount not listed on the product page | 1,000 IU |
| Bottle | 90, 180 or 270 softgels | 200 mL, about 40 servings |
| Storage | Not stated on the product page | Refrigerate after opening |
Softgels or liquid?
It is a swallowing question, not a strength question. Three softgels of De3 and one teaspoon of Omega Essentials carry the same 1,680 mg of EPA and 560 mg of DHA. If capsules are difficult, the liquid solves that. If a bottle in the fridge will be forgotten, the softgels solve that.
Questions we get at the counter
Do I need one from each family?
They are different products answering different questions, and this page cannot answer that one for you. Ask your optometrist, who knows your eyes and your health picture.
Why is the zinc lower than the AREDS2 study?
MacuHealth+ uses 25 mg of zinc rather than the 80 mg used in the original AREDS2 study. That is a formulation choice by the manufacturer. What it means for you is a question for your optometrist or pharmacist.
How long before I notice anything?
Supplements do their work quietly over time, so consistency matters more than any single day. The omega-3 pages ask for a few weeks of consistent use. Fats are structural material, not an instant effect.
Should I tell anyone I am taking these?
Yes. Tell your optometrist and your pharmacist what you take, especially if you use blood thinners, are pregnant, or manage other health conditions. And because MacuHealth+ contains added zinc, confirm that one specifically.
Can I just eat better instead?
No capsule outperforms an actual meal. Two servings of fatty fish a week is the classic benchmark, and canned sardines on toast counts just as well as a salmon fillet. A supplement is there to fill the gap between that benchmark and a real, busy life.
Can I take them with other supplements?
Check with your optometrist or pharmacist first, especially if your other supplements contain similar nutrients.
Key takeaways
- Two families, not one shelf: macular carotenoids, and omega-3.
- MacuHealth and MacuHealth+ have identical carotenoids. The plus is the added vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper.
- Vision Essence is a carotenoid formula too, but its page does not list amounts.
- De3 and Omega Essentials deliver the same EPA and DHA per day, as softgels or as a liquid.
- A supplement supports your overall routine. It is not a treatment for any eye condition.
- Bring the bottle to your next appointment. That is the shortest route to a real answer.
